Sumfest's 30th staging kicked off with a bang, celebrating this milestone with an amazing live stream and stage production. Downsound Entertainment led by Joe Bogdanovich the event's producer, showcased his flawless vision, but some artists' inconsistencies marred an otherwise exciting night.

The vibes officially started with a throwback to the golden era of the 90s in homegrown music entertainment. Tony Curtis, Mega Banton, Nitty Kutchie, Harry Toddler, and Jigsy King all delivered stellar performances, reminding both in-person and online fans of the magic that defined that era.

Leading the pack this week is "Talibans" by Bryon Messia.

Shaggy, the Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist, is a household name in the music industry. 

He has had a long and successful career, releasing hit after hit and establishing himself as one of the most popular and beloved artists in the world. 

One of his most successful albums to date is "Hotshot" released in 2000, which sold over 21 million records and has since been certified 21 times by the RIAA.

Despite the impressive sales of "Hotshot" it seems to be a nagging fact that Shaggy has not yet received a Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), considering the fact the RIAA has recognised 21 million records sold which equals two Diamond certifications.

And the misnomer is compounded by a common misconception that an RIAA certification is automatic.

but this is not the case. 

Athough the rules have changed over the course of two decades, at the time of "Hotshot" success the RIAA certifications were based on wholesale shipments of records to retailers, not on actual retail sales to consumers. 

However the process of certification still requires a submission from the artist's record and/or managment label to this very day.

The lack of a Diamond certification from the RIAA for Shaggy's "Hotshot" album does not detract Shaggy's "Diamond Status" or his success and impact on the music industry. 

The album's sales of 21 million copies since its release in 2000 speak for themselves and demonstrate the lasting popularity and appeal of Shaggy's music. 

While a Diamond certification may be considered as a recognition of commercial success for some, it is just one way to measure the impact that an album or artist has had on the music industry. 

The lack of a Diamond certification does not mean that "Hotshot" was a not a "Diamond Selling" album with 21 platinums certifications in tow.

In addition, it is possible that the actual number of retail sales to consumers could be even higher than the 21 million records sold by "Hotshot" as the RIAA certifications were based on wholesale shipments to retailers, not actual retail sales, coupled with the fact that "Hotshot" is still enjoyed and now being streamed by two entire new generations of music lovers worldwide, iit has become as undisputed mainstream classic in its own right, and that is what truly matters.

In conclusion, the lack of a Diamond certification from the RIAA for Shaggy's "Hotshot" album does not overshadow the fact that it has sold an impressive 21 million copies since its release in 2000. 

The album's commercial success and impact on the music industry speaks for itself, and the lasting popularity and appeal of Shaggy's music is a testament to his talent and legacy as an artist.

Caribbean-based music monitoring service Certifiedstreams has announced it is adding a new music chart to its official lineup.

The SocaTop10 chart will represent the 10 most popular Soca singles Globally each week, and will be weighted on cross-platform performance on Itunes, Apple Music, and Spotify.

When asked about the omission of Youtube, Chart Committee Chairperson Lloyd Laing noted that the charts are based on listenership rather than views, maintaining the traditional approach to chart listing but augmented with data-driven technology.

Trinidad & Tobago-based singer/songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist KESHAV releases his debut album, Remains (Heavy Drumz), along with its music video. 

Known for his soca and electronic music productions, as well as one-half of renowned UK/Caribbean production and performance duo Jus Now, KESHAV establishes himself in his own right with Remains. With a 12-track set spanning future R&B, rock, pop, synth wave, house, and drum and bass (DNB), he leads listeners on an emotional musical journey.

Before and during the pandemic, KESHAV wrote 45 songs in a period where he experienced the full circle of a relationship. “I usually collaborate with collaborators, but I had to produce, play, write, mix, and master the project myself. For 3 months, I was unable to speak, let alone sing, due to some inexplicable challenges. Finally, it came back and I finished the album. Love started with reactionary observations, but ended up leading to an inward journey." 

He is best known for his work with Jus Now, his long-running collaboration with UK-based Sam Chadburn aka Sam Interface. Along with productions for Major Lazer, Bunji Garlin, Busy Signal, DJ Fresh, Stylo G, Machel Montano, Kes and Beenie Man, Jus Now has scored sync placements with Fast & Furious, Nike, Apple and Angostura Rum, and performed live at major festivals including Glastonbury, Tomorrowland,  WOMAD and Boomtown. 

In his career, KESHAV has always been focused on representing Trinidad & Tobago's unique and authentic sounds. Even though Remains is a world away from the hard-charging, drum-centric soca rhythms KESHAV is known for, the project still retains an island flavor. 

Khafra Rudder, son of Trinidad music icon David Rudder, directed the "Remains" video, filmed at Manzanilla Beach and Icacos Point, two of Trinidad's most stunning and remote locations. The result is a video that juxtaposes classically tropical imagery with darker, more subdued tones as palm-lined beach vistas give way to crashing waves, overcast grey skies and the great unknown.

It might seem that Jamaican Dancehall artist Squash's time away from Jamaica is paying off for the Montego Bay native now based in the U.S.

The "6ix" is currently riding high on his current banger,  "Peace of Mind", which has topped the weekly Caribbean Top 40 Music Chart for a second time this year.

The joint production between 6ix Real Music and Hemton Music, "Peace Of Mind" has racked up just over 120,000 Spotify streams and 4 million youtube views since its release on August 4th, 2022.

Jamaican artist Masicka continues to enjoy the residual success of his critically acclaimed 2021 album "438". The single "Moments" delivered the artist his first Caribbean Top40 charttopper.

Since its debut in December 2021, the album has delivered some long-lasting hits, and among them is the mainstay collab "Moments" featuring Diapsorian Dancehall Fusion artist Stefflon Don.

"Moments" debuted on the Official Caribbean Top40 Charts in July 2022 and has maintained a strong presence; however amidst failing streaming numbers from "Traphall" acts and the consistent strength of "Moments" weekly streaming numbers on Spotify, the single was able to become a chart topper on the 31st issue of the Caribbean Top40 charts.

The single has racked up 261K Spotify streams in the last month to bring its Spotify Streaming total 3.22 Million streams, equating to 18,400 unit sales, according to caribbean based msuic metric services CertifiedStreams.com

Soca superstars DJ Private Ryan and Patrice Roberts have teamed up with the 6-piece genre-bending musical ensemble Freetown Collective on a new track called “World on Fire”. 

The track released on September 23rd features Nigel Rojas, guitarist and co-founder of the rock-reggae band Orange Sky.

A Latin-inspired, fusion-driven soundscape, "World On fire" is a potpourri of Caribbean sounds simmered in a Soca-soaked cauldron that yields a spice serving of good music.

A Joint release between the triad of Battalion Music, Damascus media and Cheah meng sound, "World On Fire" is now available on all major streaming platforms.

Trinidad's bright light on the Reggae Radar is AMI. Louditup introduced this young female singjay, and she has been making strides towards the mainstream.

Slated to be a part of a coveted stateside music incubator, her latest release "Dance Away" takes her sound to a "Dance Level" that's undeniably right in Koffee's lane, but still a distinct flavour of her own.

Fellow Trini Yung Bredda also made moves this week, stepping up five places to settle at #12 with "Heaven On Earth", which peaked at #10 a few weeks ago. "Feel It" also made a bold move peaking the single at #15, with "VIP" slipping 12 places to #33. His debut hit "Rocking Chair" continues to have a presence on the chart, appearing at #34 this week.

Newcomer Coutain maintains his presence at #26 with the collab "Nuh Basic", which features fellow Trini artists Yung Bredda and Brooklyn Descent.

An unsuspecting talent, Trinidad native Vernice Herreira is making big moves on Caribbean music under her moniker Trini Baby.

The 23-year-old multi-potentialite began her journey in music to heal after the passing of her older brother, who was an inspiration to her throughout her early life.

By 2018 the fledging talent would muster up the courage to release her first single, "Millenials", after dabbing with covers, reprises, and remixes on Facebook and feeling the positive feedback of her content. 

Two years later, she would find her breakout single, "Retro Love", which helped to establish her presence in the Caribbean music circuit.

Now with summer 2022 heating up, it seems Trini Baby has found a potential hit. The single aptly titled "Feel The Heat", was cut on the Brazilian Funk Riddim project, and since its debut two weeks ago on the Caribbean Top40 Weekly Chart, it has steadily risen through the crowd to peak at number 6. 

Skeng outpaced his fellow counterpart Skillibeng to return to the top of the weekly Caribbean Top40 Music Chart, powered by certifiedstreams.com.

Jermaine Edwards is making headway with his latest single "Hope In My Head", which features fellow homegrown artists Agent Sasco.

The conscious Christian soldier made a bold step in June with the release of the afrobeat inspired Dancehall driven single, which for some of his diehard fans is an unexpected swing from his praise and worship homebase.

"Hope In My Head" however has been warmly received by mainstream listeners, who have helped push the single to almost 15,000 Spotify Streams, and over 200,000 views on youtube since its release three weeks ago.

This week the song managed to pull a double #1, appearing on the top of the HYPEDDIT Magazine Top 100 Main Streaming Charts, and its Top 100 Reggae/Dub Charts simultaenously, a impressive acheivement for an act normally considered a "Gospel" artist within the mainstream space.

The single has been in regular rotation on terrestrial radio in Jamaica, Miami, UK, Germany, and Canada, and has even found its way to some of the Internet's most respected online Reggae/Dancehall format radio hubs.

According to music data service Chartmetrics, since the release of the single on June 17th Jermaine Edwards has moved up 52 spots, placing him in the top 500 artists in Jamaica for the first time in his career with a Ranking of #461 out of 7,200 professionally recognized artists from the country of Jamaica.

Trinidadian producer GBMnutron has been making major steps to establish his presence as an artist on the centerstage and the musical transistion has received a warm welcome by fans across the Caribbean diaspora and in far flung regions such as France, Great Britian, and in the Boroughs of New York.

But with summer heating up Gbmnutron is stepping out hot with his latest single aptly titled "Tricks", which critics hail as a "a sizzling bouncy single driven by an afro-caribbean fusion that blurs the lines between afrobeat, soca and tropical house."

Released in early April 2022, "Tricks" was produced in collaboration with fellow &T&T native DJ Spider, and though it was off to a slow start, the track is about to find a second gear with the release of the official video, now available Youtube.

Jamaica's rising international star Skeng, has maintained his number one spot on the Caribbean Top40 chart for the fouth consecutive week in a row.

Skeng's "Gvnman Shift" managed to hold off Skillibeng's "Love Handle"(#2) but held on to third place with the hit collab "Protocol"(#3), followed by his own "Curves" at #4.

Jahshii maintain his top 5 placement with the single "Born Fighter" still inching its way to the top slot.

Skeng continues his top 10 dominance with London(#6) and 23(#7), holding the Marcy Chin/Skillbeng collab "Wul Night", which moved up six places this week to settle at #8 just ahead of Skillibeng's Gag(#9), and Alakaline's "Ah" which closed this weeks Top 10 heavyweights.

Jamaican Dancehall Star Charly Black is already warming up for a hot summer in 2022 with Bahamian female singer It's Dia, who he featured on his latest release "Sunday To Sunday".

The single released on June 3rd is produced by Crawba productions in collaboration with Channel 17 Records and features rising Bahamian female talent It's Dia who hails from Nassau in the multi-island nation of Bahamas.

It's Dia is an accomplished Poet, who began experimenting with Music in 2018, and found national acclaim in her home ground in 2021 with her 17 track debut album "Voices In My Head" which included the hit single "Barkin A Lot".

In 2019, at the fresh age of 16, Trinidadian budding entertainer Coutain declared that he wanted to become a force to contend with in the Caribbean Region.

Fast forward three years later and the young bubbling teen with the aspiration of being Trinidad's next comedic actor is now fully "Trinibad", a status he sealed in the spring of 2021, with the single "Trinibadian".

Now 19 years old, the emerging talent from the northeastern town of Sangre Grande on the Trinidad mainland has recently released the sequel to his G Syde EP project which he kicked off with the "G Syde Tape" in January 2022.

With 28 days on the Dancehall Global Top40 music charts, Trinidadian band Kes is quietly making its way as a #1 contender.

The single released on March 18th has already racked up over a 1.2 million views on Youtube, and close to 500,000 all-time Spotify streams, "Liki Tiki" is whispering a close second to Spice who is enjoying her fourth week on the top of the charts.

But with Spice racking up 2.3 million Spotify streams this week for "Go Down Deh" its gonna be a hard sprint next week to break Spice's four week stride with Kes managing to haul in just 59,300+ Spotify Streams this week.

But never say never.

Produced by a formidable team led by Micheal Brun, and Dwala, "Liki Tiki" is distributed by California based outfit Ineffable Records and has been enjoying a warm reception on the global circuit over the last few weeks.

The twin island nation of Trinidad & Tobago has been churning out a legion of multi talented genre fusing artists in recent times, some who are quickly earning the South Caribbean nation a reputation as a contender in the global music circuit.

One such talent to watch is the young female singer/songwriter AMI.

Describing her music as "a spiritually powered non-typical soundscape", she notes with pride that her musical drive is heavily inspired by Koffee, with a writing style indicative of Chronixx.

With a look like Joby Jay, and vocals like Koffee, AMI is an emerging talent to keep an eye on in 2022.

Though some critics have noted that AMI's sound is a close doppleganger of the Grammy winning freshman, the burgeoning act bears no bones and has no qualms with the similarities, and also hails Bob Marley, Papa San and Whitney Houston as other muses of inspiration.

Her latest single, "Purpose" is a motivational single that encourages listeners to "chase thier dreams once the higher power lights that fire in your heart."

Trinidad and Tobago native Terri Lyons, known for her sultry soca singles, has pushed the borders of Caribbean hypermedia with the release of her Japanese anime-styled video "A Better Tomorrow".

The video was produced by the trini led team at GemGFX led by Gerelle Forbes with the song's production helmed by songwriter Mark Loquan.

The five-minute video is an impressive visual, so much so it is considered by four internationally recognised music video award panels, most notably the Euro Music Video Awards and The International Music Video Awards amongst others.

Trinidad's native band Kes, has continued to bear fruit in 2022, capping off the start of a good year with an impressive milestone.

Produced by Lori Antoinette and distributed by Ineffable Music, The Soca driven band's latest single "Liki Tiki", released on the 18th of March 2022, has hit 1 million views on Youtube, and over 400,000 streams on Spotify.

Known for thier unique blend of Caribbean driven music, Kes the band was formed 2005 by brothers Kees, Hans and Jon Dieffenthaller with longtime friend Riad Boochoon.

The band has recorded five full length studio albums and in the process delivered over 20 chart hitting singles.

Kes next performance is slated for Toronto Canada, at the Markham Showground. Show starts at 4pm.

This week's Caribbean Top40 chart saw Skeng's "London" grabbing the top slot and bracing the second with "Curves". Jahshii's "Born Fighter" falls to third place this week.

Marcy Chin continues to make her presence felt with her Collab single "Wul Night" at #4 with Skillibeng holding on to #5 with "Love Handles".

Yung Bredda continues to represent with his latest single "Feel It" still in the Top 10 at #8, with Teejay's "Glow" and Skillbeng's "Shake" remix with Jada Kingdom closing off the Top 10 at #9 and #10 respectively.

This week's artist with the newest entries is Shaneil Muir with "Ride it", "Exclusive", and "Justice." also included are Grabba Finesse's "Iron", "Speed It" by Dat-C DQ, "Ready" by Squash, and "Last Night" by Jada Kingdom.

Jamaica emerging artist Magic Flute has finally released the visuals for his viral hit "Thats Life", a cover of the 1963 original recorded by Marion Montgomery but made famous by Frank Sinatra in 1966.

The team behind the soulful Reggaefied version included renowned producer Cleveland Browne, alongside Owen Renalls and David Luckain, and is distributed on the Macten Records imprint.

Originally recorded and released in 2020, the single found traction in early 2021, and has been in regular rotation on terrestrial radio in Jamaica, Miami, New York, and UK.

Jamaican New Wave Dancehall artist Jahshii has finally made his way to the top of the Weekly Caribbean Top40 Chart with his hit single "Born Fighter".

The track produced by Janodon Records was released in January of this year and has generated over 400,000+ Spotify Streams coupled with 10 million views on Youtube and growing.

Jahshii made his debut on the Homegrown music scene in 2017 with the single "Dutty Informa", but it was 2019's "Life Changes" that would earn the underground starlight his household name as a one to watch in 2021.

He did not disappoint and remained consistent in 2021 with "Shift Change" and "Keep Up" as notable singles that clicked with a new audience in the UK and the Western African States, especially Nigeria and Ghana. 

Slated as a major act on this year's opening night of Sumfest 2022, Jahshii has a catalogue of well-listened songs that fans are anticipating seeing live on July 22nd in Montego Bay Jamaica.

Jamaican based Reggae Revivalist, Protoje stepped out from the hills recently to chat with Edge 105FM's Ron Muschette about his new music, upcoming tours, and what's next for his Indiggnation camp.

One interesting reveal by the Reggae fusion artist was his 2022 commitment to release one new track each month, which he kicked off with his latest track "Hills" which peaked on the Official Reggae Top40 Chart, Reggaetop40.com and held the top slot for two weeks.

With May 2022 almost halfway through, Protoje is already teasing his latest single, "Incient Stepping", produced by Zion I Kings, the diverse US-based reggae outfit considered by some as one of the most talented production teams in Global Reggae.

The Ron Muschette show is considered the #1 morning radio show in Jamaica and its greater Diaspora and is Live Mon -Fri on the Edge105FM in Jamaica and edge105.com worldwide.

Influenced by the tradition of Burru drumming, the main instruments of the ceremony were the Funde, Kette and Repeater drums accompanied with chants which were a fusion of christian hymns and traditional religious forms. Count Ossie is among the main influencers in the formation of this drumming ritual. Eventually, pioneers such as Count Ossie and Ras Michael commercialised a version of the music.

The Kingston based female lyricist has been taking a careful approach to her musical journey and has already solidified her place in the Caribbean music underground with singles such as 2020's "Freestyle Pro" release which had the head of music critics nodding to her on the spot lyrical versatility that many have compared to female counterpart Shaniel Muir, another talented act rising from the now-defunct Magnum Kings & Queens stage.
